October 18, 2024 - San Diego, California. Garcia Hong Law, representing Kobe La in a civil case against Gabe Ramos, successfully moved for terminating sanctions, leading the court to strike Ramos' answer. Ramos had previously pled guilty in a related criminal case. In the civil case, Ramos claimed that Kobe had provoked the attack and was part of a "Paradise Hills gang." At the time, Kobe was a student at UCSD. He has never been part of any gang.

Despite these accusations, Ramos failed to provide any evidence and did not comply with court orders, prompting the court to grant Garcia Hong Law's motion. With the defendant's answer now stricken, the case is proceeding to default, where Kobe will present evidence of the injuries he suffered.

Kobe was assaulted by Ramos during a dispute at an Ocean Beach bonfire in June 2021. Ramos threatened Kobe and his friends that they were using "his spot." Kobe, who is Asian American, also alleged in his lawsuit that Ramos and his girlfriend, Kori, yelled racial threats at him and his friends during the assault. During the litigation, Kori Ramos testified that she used the word "yellow bitch" because she saw someone wearing a yellow shirt. Kobe has alleged hate violence under the Ralph Civil Rights Act.

Kobe suffered serious injuries, including a broken jaw. Attorneys Mark Simpliciano and Valerie Garcia Hong have been leading Kobe’s legal representation, ensuring his rights are upheld as the case moves forward to prove the impact of the assault on Kobe's life.
